WHEN: The Hernandez exhibition opens Friday, Oct. 4, and runs through Monday, Nov. 18. On Friday, Oct. 11, Hatch Show Print will host an artist’s reception in honor of Hernandez in the Haley Gallery. The reception, hosted from 5 – 7 p.m., is open to the public.
WHO: Renowned artist Hernandez was invited by Hatch Show Print to work in-studio as the 2019 visiting artist. Hernandez spent two weeks at Hatch Show Print creating a series of collages cut out from stock imagery and combined with his own test prints. Hernandez also carved new imagery with help from the Hatch Show Print team. All of this work resulted in the collection he called Psychedelic Honky-Tonk Rock and Roll Freak Circus. This collection represents the clashing of music and pop culture. According to Hernandez, “I couldn’t think of a better place to create all of this than at Hatch Show Print.”
Hernandez is a member of Speedball Art’s Print Posse, which is made up of some of today’s most well-known and respected printmakers. These artists are enlisted to advise in the development of new products, make new work and inspire printmakers worldwide through workshops, demos and more.
Hernandez’s work has been featured in the 2011 Communication Arts Typography annual, the 2011 and 2012 Communication Arts Illustration annual and was also published in the 2012 book Mexican Graphics by Korero Books-UK. Hernandez has also designed and printed gig posters for such artists as The Kills, Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, Santana and more. In 2013, Hernandez was selected as the official poster artist to design the commemorative poster for the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
Hernandez is a founding partner of Burning Bones Press and has served as an instructor of Screen Printing at Rice University, Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts. Corporate work has included Miller Brewing Company, Google, Lincoln Motor Company, APPLE, Live Nation, New West Records, C3 Presents, Hohner USA, Goode Company, Underbelly, the Houston Chronicle, Saint Arnold Brewing Company and more. One of his career highlights has been his work with childhood idol and hot rod legend, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. He is also the creator of the apparel line Electric Calavera. Hernandez’s work was included in the 2012 Oso Bay Biennial Heavy Hitters Exhibition, as well as in the 2012 AIGA Texas Show.

About Hatch Show Print
Founded by brothers Charles and Herbert Hatch, Hatch Show Print opened in Nashville in 1879. For much of the 20th century, the shop’s vibrant posters served as a leading advertising medium for Southern entertainment, and included work for many members of the Grand Ole Opry such as Bill Monroe, Minnie Pearl and Ernest Tubb, and for rock & roll greats such as Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry. Thousands of posters and billboard-size advertisements were printed for traveling vaudeville and minstrel shows, circuses and carnivals barnstorming across the country. In 1992, Hatch Show Print became a historic property of the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum. Today, Hatch Show Print is a thriving letterpress poster and design shop in downtown Nashville, with seven full-time designer-printers on staff. The shop creates and prints 500 to 600 poster jobs every year for clients ranging from Mumford & Sons and Willie Nelson to brands such as Fossil, Taschen and the U.S. Postal Service.
