The 20 year old Australian artist has a penchant for writing sticky melodies that you just can’t shake – her music has garnered attention from the likes of NY Times, NOISEY, Stereogum and more, including NPR- who said that the only downside to listening to her track, “Better” is that your heart may actually explode with happiness. PAPER Magazine recently named her in their “100 Women Revolutionizing Pop”, and she also opened for Post Malone and Maggie Rogers. Having grown up in the sleepy town of Brisbane, Australia, (which also happens to be my home town!), Mallrat finds beauty in the mundane. With refreshingly honest observations of day-to-day life and her relatable and confessional lyrics layered over saccharine melodies, there’s a slow-burning restlessness in her sound that is impossible to ignore – her songs perfectly encapsulate all the weirdness and wonder that comes with being a teenager.
“All the awkwardness and annoyances of suburban teenage life find their way into the songs of Grace Shaw, a 19-year-old Australian who calls herself Mallrat. She worries, and doesn’t worry, about fitting in or being liked; she mocks the comforts of sterile surroundings. Her songs turn mild rap cadences into singsong melodies, set to vamps that match guitar or piano chords with perky electronics. And during the festival she performed at a mall store.” – New York Times
“A singer, songwriter and rapper who records under the name Mallrat, Grace Shaw is taking off internationally on the strength of “Better,” an irrepressibly sparkling slice of dreamy pop. The only downside to “Better”: If you crank it on the year’s first spring day, your heart may actually explode with happiness. (Still, though, you should try it.)” – NPR
